Marian and Donald had five children and like many farmers in those days a very busy schedule. Marian's hours were filled with a multitude of chores which included rising very early to cook breakfast for us all and send us off to school, assist in milking the cows, cleaning, tending a garden, working in the fields and making sure we had enough preserves put away for the winter. She always had a wonderful garden and an abundance of apple trees that her father had planted.
We lived in a small, one storey farmhouse. So small, that none of us had a bedroom untill we were teenagers and my Dad divided the existing livingroom into three rooms-one for my sister, Judy and I and one for my older brother, Bill. The other two siblings came along shortly after.I think they occupied the livingroom couch and a crib in my parent's room. When my grandfather died, we moved to his very large house on a bigger farm. I still shared a bedroom above the kitchen with my sister where we had a constant reminder of good food smells wafting up through the floor register.
There was an even bigger garden there
